Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Maldives from July 25 to July 26, 2025, as the guest of honour at the country's 60th Independence Day celebrations. During his visit, Modi was welcomed by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and other top officials including Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla. The visit marked a renewed effort to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. India extended a $565 million (INR 4,850 crore) line of credit to the Maldives, signaling a reset in ties with the debt-plagued island nation. The leaders reviewed progress on the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a 'Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership' adopted in 2024 and signed several agreements, including a memorandum of understanding to enhance collaboration in fisheries. Additionally, an agreement was reached to enable Indian tourists to use the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system in the Maldives, expected to increase Indian tourist arrivals by 10-15%. Maldives Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim expressed interest in attracting Indian investment in the hospitality sector. President Muizzu described Modi's visit as a defining moment that sets a clear path for the future of Maldives-India relations. Modi is scheduled to visit Tamil Nadu after concluding his Maldives trip, where he will inaugurate key projects including a new terminal building at Tuticorin Airport.
