South Calcutta Law College resumed classes on 7 July after an 11-day shutdown that followed the gang rape of a first-year student on campus. Kolkata Police cleared the reopening and deployed senior officers and constables at the Kasba premises, while private guards verified student identity cards at the gate. Vice-Principal Nayna Chatterjee said attendance on the first day was limited to first-semester BA LL.B. students who had yet to file examination forms; about 100 students, several accompanied by parents, entered under the new security regime. The students’ union room and the security guard’s post remain sealed as part of the investigation. The college was closed on 29 June amid protests after the 25 June assault, allegedly carried out by an alumnus and two senior students associated with the Trinamool Congress’s student wing. All three have been arrested. Regular classes for the rest of the cohort are scheduled to resume on 8 July, with authorities pledging continued police presence until conditions stabilise.
