Police in Maharashtra have arrested the principal and a woman attendant of a private school in Thane district after they allegedly stripped several minor girls to verify whether they were menstruating. The incident occurred on Tuesday in the Shahapur area when staff discovered bloodstains in a washroom. The principal called girls from Classes 5 to 10 into a hall, showed them images of the stains and asked who was on their period. Those who said they were not menstruating were taken to a toilet and compelled to remove their clothes for inspection, according to the police complaint. An FIR names eight people—the principal, four teachers, two trustees and the attendant—under Sections 74 and 76 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The principal and attendant were arrested on Wednesday night and are expected to appear in court on Thursday, while investigations continue against the remaining staff. The episode sparked protests by parents outside the campus and was raised in the state legislature. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a full probe, with Minister Girish Mahajan telling lawmakers that "strict action" will follow if the allegations are confirmed.
