India's Supreme Court has mandated the State Bank of India (SBI) to provide data linking donors with recipients in the political funding controversy involving electoral bonds. This directive comes in the wake of revelations about the electoral bonds system, which allowed anonymous donations to political parties. Among the top donors, Future Gaming, led by Santiago Martin, emerged as the largest, contributing Rs 509 crore to DMK. Additionally, significant donations were made by IT companies, including Infosys, Cyient, and Zensar Technologies, with Cyient donating Rs 10 crore in two tranches. The electoral bonds system, recently shut down by the Supreme Court weeks before a national election, had permitted major corporations to anonymously fund political activities over the past five years. The controversy also involves the Modi government, which is accused of allowing the BJP to encash expired electoral bonds, contravening SBI's rules.
