The Supreme Court of India has reinstated Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Sunil Kumar Singh to the Bihar Legislative Council, overturning the Election Commission of India's notification from December 30, which called for a byelection to his seat. The Court deemed the expulsion of Singh, which was based on his unruly behavior in the House, as 'highly excessive' and 'disproportionate'. The ruling emphasizes the need for legislative penalties to be proportional and to maintain democratic participation, as stated by the Court. This decision poses a setback for the Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar.
