India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar on the latter’s death anniversary at Jannayak Sthal, Vijay Ghat in New Delhi on 8 July. The commemoration was part of a nationwide homage to the socialist leader, who served as India’s eighth prime minister in 1990–91. Describing Chandra Shekhar as “one of the greatest sons of Bharat” and a steadfast proponent of democratic values, Dhankhar recalled the former premier’s reputation as a ‘Young Turk’ who pushed for intra-party democracy during his four-decade parliamentary career. Other dignitaries and officials also laid wreaths at the memorial, marking 17 years since Chandra Shekhar’s passing.
