Virat Kant, the grandson of former Indian vice-president Krishan Kant, formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday in New Delhi. He was welcomed into the party by BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh and Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar. Chugh described the move as a “masterstroke,” noting Krishan Kant’s role in India’s freedom movement and his later tenure as vice-president from 1997 until his death in 2002. Jakhar highlighted the family’s roots in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district and said the induction showed how the party continues to expand its base. Virat Kant thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders for what he called an opportunity to contribute to national development. Neither he nor party officials outlined an immediate electoral role, but the BJP is courting candidates with prominent political legacies ahead of upcoming state and national contests.
