Bharatiya Janata Party president and Union Minister J.P. Nadda on 23 June paid floral tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi, marking the 72nd anniversary of the Jana Sangh founder’s death, observed by the party as “Balidan Diwas.” Nadda said commemorations were being held country-wide and called the 2019 abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A a fulfilment of Mookerjee’s opposition to Jammu and Kashmir’s former special status. Two weeks later, on 6 July, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, state BJP president Virendra Sachdeva and other leaders gathered at the same venue to plant trees and honour Mookerjee on what the party counts as his 125th birth anniversary. Speakers at the event praised Mookerjee’s role in India’s independence-era politics and his emphasis on “Nation First” ideology.
