The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has urged consumers to discard three lots of Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart after tests raised concerns about possible contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. Walmart has removed the products from shelves and is offering refunds. The warning follows notifications from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which detected Cesium-137 in shipping containers and a sample of breaded shrimp from Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, known as BMS Foods, at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah. Although no shrimp that tested positive entered U.S. commerce, the FDA said the affected lots "appear to have been prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions" and could pose a safety concern with prolonged exposure. The recall covers 2-pound bags of Great Value Frozen Raw EZ Peel Tail-On White Vannamei Shrimp bearing lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1, all with a best-by date of 15 March 2027. The items were distributed to Walmart stores in 13 states, including Alabama, Florida and Texas. FDA officials said the detected radioactivity—about 68 becquerels per kilogram—is well below the agency’s intervention threshold of 1,200 Bq/kg, but advised the recall to reduce consumers’ cumulative exposure. The agency has placed BMS Foods on an import alert blocking further shipments until the company addresses the contamination concerns. Investigations with Indonesian regulators are ongoing.
