The U.S. Food and Drug Administration urged consumers, retailers and food-service operators on Tuesday to stop eating, selling or serving specific lots of Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart after tests indicated possible contamination with the radioactive isotope cesium-137. U.S. Customs and Border Protection first detected elevated radiation levels in shipping containers at the ports of Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah and Miami. Follow-up FDA sampling confirmed cesium-137 in one batch of breaded shrimp originating from Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, traded as BMS Foods. Although authorities say no shrimp that tested positive has entered U.S. commerce, the agency advised Walmart to recall product linked to the supplier and placed the company on an import alert that blocks further shipments until safety issues are resolved. The advisory covers three lot codes—8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1—with a best-by date of 15 March 2027. The products may have been distributed to Walmart stores in 13 states ranging from Alabama to Texas. Consumers who find the affected shrimp are asked to dispose of it and contact their healthcare provider if they believe they have been exposed to elevated radiation.
