The Philippine executive branch has proposed a national budget of ₱6.793 trillion for 2026, which includes ₱10.77 billion in secret funds, nearly half allocated to the Office of the President. If approved, the President's office will receive ₱4.5 billion in difficult-to-audit funds for the seventh consecutive year. Meanwhile, the budget for the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program, a free nutritious meal initiative, is expected to exceed ₱300 trillion in 2026, according to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati. The MBG program has recently faced challenges following a mass food poisoning incident in Sragen, Central Java, where 251 students, teachers, and parents were affected after consuming MBG meals. This incident led to the temporary suspension of distribution from the implicated food provider. Despite the involvement of hotels, restaurants, and cafes in supplying MBG meals, the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) assures that this does not negatively impact micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Additionally, there is ongoing discussion in the Philippine House of Representatives regarding funding for the AKAP program in 2026, with some senators expressing concern over the ₱2.5 million cost per Department of Education classroom. Notably, last year the Department of Budget and Management did not request AKAP funding, but the House included it in the General Appropriations Bill.
