Iran has executed at least 841 people so far in 2025, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Friday. The tally, covering the period to 28 August, already surpasses last year’s total and reflects what the agency called a “major increase” in the use of capital punishment. Spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva that Iran carried out a minimum of 110 executions in July alone—more than twice the number recorded in July 2024. The rights office has verified seven public hangings this year and warned that 11 prisoners, including political opponents and participants in the 2022 protests, face imminent execution. The UN said the death penalty is being employed as a tool of state intimidation, disproportionately targeting ethnic minorities and migrants. It urged Tehran to impose an immediate moratorium and move toward abolition. According to the agency, the pace of executions accelerated after Israel’s military strike on Iran in June, underscoring the need for greater transparency and restraint.
