U.S. late-night host Jimmy Kimmel said he has secured Italian citizenship, describing the political climate under President Donald Trump’s second term as “so much worse” than he anticipated. The comedian disclosed the move during an Aug. 7 episode of the “Sarah Silverman Podcast,” telling the host that a number of his acquaintances are also exploring foreign passports. Kimmel, 57, qualified for citizenship by descent, tracing his lineage to great-grandparents who emigrated from Ischia in the late 19th century. He first mentioned completing the process at a June ceremony hosted by the Italian Consulate in Los Angeles. The announcement follows heightened friction between Kimmel and Trump. In July, the president predicted on Truth Social that the ABC personality would be the “next” late-night figure to lose his show after CBS cancelled Stephen Colbert’s program. Kimmel has not said whether he intends to relocate permanently, but his remarks place him among a small group of entertainers— including Rosie O’Donnell in Ireland and Ellen DeGeneres in England—who have left the United States since Trump’s re-election.
