A 26-year-old man from Tokyo died after being attacked by a brown bear near Mount Rausu on the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido on August 14, 2025. The Hokkaido police confirmed that the cause of death was hemorrhagic shock due to multiple traumatic injuries sustained in a struggle with the bear. Following the attack, three bears were culled near the site. The incident prompted temporary closure of parts of the Shiretoko Five Lakes area. In addition to this fatal attack, multiple bear sightings and reports of bear-related damage were recorded in Hokkaido, including in Sapporo's Nishioka Park and a ski jump facility in Nayoro City, leading to practice cancellations and park closures. Separately, in Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, a 93-year-old man was found bleeding at home and initially suspected to have been attacked by a bear. However, a subsequent autopsy revealed the cause of death as hemorrhagic shock from multiple stab wounds, and the case is now being investigated as a homicide. Authorities in Akita are correcting previous public warnings that had attributed the death to a bear attack.
