The number of atomic bomb survivors (hibakusha) in Japan has fallen below 100,000 for the first time, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. As of the end of fiscal year 2024, the population of registered hibakusha holding health handbooks stands under this threshold, with an average age of 86.13 years, reflecting the aging survivor demographic 80 years after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the bombings, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), a Nobel Prize-winning international NGO, has launched a special online memorial site called the "Children's Peace Memorial" to honor over 38,000 children who died as a result of the bombings.
