A British F-35B stealth fighter jet from the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales made an emergency landing at Kagoshima Airport in Japan on August 10, 2025, due to a technical malfunction during joint military drills involving the UK, Japan, and the US. This marks at least the second such incident involving F-35B jets from the same carrier, following a previous technical fault that left another F-35B stranded in India weeks earlier. No injuries were reported from the emergency landing in Japan. The HMS Prince of Wales, which can carry up to 36 F-35B aircraft and has a standard displacement of 65,000 tons with a length of 284 meters, recently made its second port call in Japan at Yokosuka as part of a months-long Indo-Pacific deployment leading a multinational carrier strike group. During this deployment, British F-35B jets conducted their first landings and takeoffs on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's helicopter carrier Kaga, which along with the Izumo-class ships, is undergoing modifications to enhance its capability as a de facto aircraft carrier. Additionally, 17 Osprey aircraft have completed relocation to Saga from Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture, with some already conducting training flights around the base and other Self-Defense Force locations.
