A British Royal Air Force F-35B Lightning stealth fighter jet made an emergency landing at Kagoshima Airport in Japan on August 10, 2025, due to a technical malfunction. The incident occurred during joint military drills involving British, U.S., and Japanese forces. This emergency landing temporarily disrupted commercial flights but resulted in no injuries. This event follows a similar technical fault that left another British F-35B stranded in India weeks earlier. The F-35B involved in the Japan incident was operating from the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier, which recently made its first port call in Japan at Yokosuka Naval Base as part of the final leg of a months-long Indo-Pacific deployment leading a multinational carrier strike group. The HMS Prince of Wales, commissioned in 2019 with a standard displacement of 65,000 tons and a length of 284 meters, can carry up to 36 F-35B jets. During the deployment, RAF F-35Bs also conducted operations from the Japanese helicopter carrier JS Kaga (DDH-184), marking the first time British jets have landed and taken off from the vessel, which is being converted into a light aircraft carrier. The port call by the British carrier strike group is the first British Navy visit to a Japanese port since 2021 and included the first-ever docking of a Norwegian Navy vessel in Japan. Japanese defense and foreign ministries stated that the visit underscores the commitment of the UK and Norway to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The HMS Prince of Wales is also scheduled to visit Tokyo before departing Japan on September 2, 2025.
