Japan has recorded a new high in infections of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), a tick-borne viral disease. As of August 10, 2025, the total number of SFTS cases reached 135, surpassing the previous record of 134 cases in 2023 since the disease was first reported domestically in 2013. The fatality rate of SFTS in Japan is approximately 27% to 30%, with over 10 deaths reported this year. The infections, previously concentrated in western Japan, have expanded to regions including Hokkaido, Kanto, and Chubu. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has urged the public to take preventive measures such as wearing long sleeves and long pants when in grassy or wooded areas to reduce the risk of tick bites. Medical institutions reported eight new cases in the week of August 4 to 10. The increase in cases highlights the ongoing public health challenge posed by tick-borne infections in Japan.
