On July 30, 2025, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Russia near the Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings for Japan, Hawaii, and Kamchatka. Following the seismic event, at least four whales were found washed ashore in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The tsunami warning along Japan's Pacific coast indicated potential waves up to three meters high. The incident of stranded whales occurred just hours before the tsunami alert was issued. Additionally, the earthquake may have triggered the eruption of the Kracheninnikov volcano in Kamchatka, which erupted for the first time in more than 450 years, sending a column of ash 6,000 meters into the atmosphere. The eruption and earthquake are linked by Russian authorities as part of the same geological activity.
