Residents of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula were warned of potential tsunami waves as a series of earthquakes struck off the Russian coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Officials in Hawaii issued tsunami watches, which were later canceled.
A magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Sunday, minutes after a 6.7 tremor, the U.S. Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ said. The epicentre was located about 150 kilometres east of the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of roughly 10 kilometres. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the peninsula and the sparsely populated Commander Islands, forecasting hazardous waves of 30 centimetres to one metre. Russian emergency officials said the Aleutsky District could see waves up to 60 centimetres and the Ust-Kamchatsky area 15–40 centimetres. A precautionary tsunami watch for Hawaii was withdrawn within hours. Authorities reported no immediate casualties or major damage but urged residents in low-lying coastal areas to move to higher ground as aftershocks, including another magnitude-6.7 event, continued. Kamchatka lies on the volatile boundary of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, a region that has produced multiple earthquakes above magnitude 8 in the past century.
