US President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post on 23 July that Japan is “for the first time ever” opening its market to American goods, including cars, SUVs, trucks and agricultural products such as rice, which he noted had long faced strict import barriers. Trump added that the potential gains from wider access to the Japanese market “may be as big a profit factor as the tariffs themselves,” referring to his administration’s wider trade policy. Japanese officials have not immediately commented on the claim, and no new bilateral trade agreement has been announced.
