A light Cessna Citation XLS operated by Amref Flying Doctors crashed into a residential area in Mwihoko, Kiambu County, shortly after departing Nairobi’s Wilson Airport on Wednesday afternoon, killing six people and injuring at least two others. The aircraft, tail number 5Y-FDM, took off at 2:17 p.m. local time bound for Hargeisa, Somaliland, and lost radio and radar contact three minutes later, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said. Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula confirmed the fatalities, identifying the victims as two doctors and two nurses on board and two residents on the ground. Kenya Defence Forces, police and emergency crews secured the crash site and transferred the injured to hospital. Amref Flying Doctors Chief Executive Stephen Gitau said the medical-evacuation charity is cooperating fully with investigators as aviation authorities work to determine the cause of the accident.
