A lorry carrying electricity poles lost control on the Keroka–Sotik road on Friday evening, ploughing into pedestrians and several vehicles in Kijauri Town, Nyamira County. Local police and broadcasters said at least seven people were killed, while eyewitness accounts put the death toll at about ten. Several other victims were taken to nearby hospitals with serious injuries. The crash occurred on a stretch frequently flagged by residents as hazardous. Community members say repeated requests for speed-control bumps have gone unanswered by the Kenya National Highways Authority, which recently installed warning signs instead of physical barriers. Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident and the adequacy of safety measures on the busy highway.
