The Kenya Coalition of Church Alliances and Ministries has expressed support for the government’s recent decision to raise the legal alcohol drinking age from 18 to 21 years, as part of a broader national policy aimed at preventing, managing, and controlling alcohol consumption. This policy, proposed by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), also includes measures such as banning online alcohol sales. Church leaders have welcomed these proposals, stating they will help restore societal dignity and have called for their immediate implementation. However, some clerics in Kiambu have urged NACADA to focus on enforcing existing alcohol laws rather than adopting new regulations. The clergy have also cautioned against potential abuse of power in the enforcement of these tougher alcohol laws.
