Kenya has launched a nationwide vaccination campaign targeting children aged 9 months to 14 years against typhoid, measles, and rubella. The campaign, running from July 5 to 14, 2025, aims to protect over 20 million children across all 47 counties. This initiative includes the introduction of the typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) for the first time in the country, addressing a rise in antimicrobial-resistant typhoid cases. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale officially launched the integrated campaign at Githogoro Grounds in Westlands, Nairobi. Counties such as Kilifi, Machakos, Kakamega, and Trans Mara have begun localized vaccination efforts, with targets ranging from tens of thousands to over one million children per county. As of mid-campaign, approximately 12.1 million children have been vaccinated against typhoid and 3.5 million against measles. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with UNICEF and supported by the World Health Organization, is providing vaccines at all immunizing facilities nationwide. The government has allocated specific resources in the 2025/26 budget to ensure vaccine procurement and delivery, aiming to prevent stockouts and ensure no child misses vaccination. Health officials have emphasized the safety and importance of the vaccines, encouraging parents to participate despite challenges such as vaccine resistance and stigma in some areas. Religious leaders in regions like Diani have also advocated for vaccination, affirming vaccine safety. This campaign represents Kenya's largest immunization effort to date, aiming to curb the burden of preventable diseases and improve child health outcomes nationwide.
