Korean Air Lines plans to buy 103 Boeing aircraft in a deal that would be the largest commercial plane order in South Korean history, according to people familiar with the matter. The purchase, announced in Washington on 25 August after a meeting between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump, is valued at roughly $36.2 billion for the jets and a separate $13.7 billion agreement with GE Aerospace for engines, bringing the package to nearly $50 billion. The order comprises 50 single-aisle 737-10s, 25 787-10 Dreamliners, 20 777-9 wide-body jets and eight 777-8 freighters, with deliveries scheduled through the end of 2030. Korean Air said the new aircraft will modernise its fleet and support its planned merger with Asiana Airlines while expanding cargo capacity amid sustained demand for air freight. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who hosted a business round-table attended by Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Stephanie Pope and Korean Air chief executive Walter Cho, said the transaction underscores deepening economic ties between the two allies. For Boeing, the order bolsters backlogs for its 737 MAX and forthcoming 777X programs, while GE Aerospace secures long-term engine maintenance revenue.
