South Korea’s special prosecutor asked a Seoul court on Thursday to issue an arrest warrant for former first lady Kim Keon Hee, a day after grilling her for several hours on multiple corruption allegations. Prosecutors say the 52-year-old is under investigation for stock fraud, bribery and illegal influence peddling. The probe centres on claims she helped inflate share prices between 2009 and 2012 and accepted a Dior handbag worth about $2,200 in violation of anti-graft laws. Kim apologised for “causing concern” when she appeared for questioning on Wednesday but denied wrongdoing and pledged to cooperate. If the court approves the warrant, Kim would join her husband, former president Yoon Suk Yeol, in detention—the first time an ex-presidential couple could be jailed simultaneously in South Korea. Yoon, 64, has been held since July on insurrection charges stemming from his brief declaration of martial law and twice resisted efforts this week to move him for questioning tied to his wife’s case. The developments deepen the political turmoil that followed Yoon’s impeachment in April.
