U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again and hopes the encounter can take place before the end of the year. “Someday I’ll see him—I look forward to it,” Trump told reporters, adding that both sides could make “major progress” on issues concerning the Korean Peninsula. Trump’s remarks were delivered during Oval Office talks with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who is in Washington for his first White House visit. The two leaders agreed to pursue renewed diplomacy with Pyongyang, and Trump claimed that North Korea has fired fewer missiles since he returned to office on Jan. 20. He added, “We think we can do something on North and South Korea.” The comments revive speculation about a fresh round of U.S.–North Korea diplomacy. Trump and Kim held three summits during Trump’s first term, beginning in Singapore in 2018, but those meetings failed to produce a lasting agreement on denuclearization. According to Japanese and South Korean media reports, Trump signaled he may try to align a new meeting with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit slated for South Korea this autumn, though no date or venue has been set.
