President Donald Trump said on Monday that he has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin several times over the past week, including after hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House on Aug. 18. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that "every conversation" with Putin has been "a good conversation," and he believes the two sides are "going to get the war done," referring to the nearly three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to Trump, the most recent calls focused on ending the war and on "limiting nuclear weapons." He said both leaders discussed broader denuclearization and that Washington intends to bring China into any future arms-control framework. Trump added that he and Putin had earlier held a meeting in Alaska where missiles and nuclear issues were also on the agenda. Separately, special envoy Keith Kellogg told reporters in Kyiv that U.S. officials are "working very, very hard" to secure direct peace talks between Putin and Zelenskyy and to craft security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump said he will decide on next steps within two weeks if a Putin-Zelenskyy summit cannot be arranged.
