The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) has adopted new regulations targeting data brokers, expanding the definition of a 'data broker' and introducing a requirement for registration and an annual fee to fund the California Data Broker Registry. This initiative also includes the development of a deletion mechanism known as the Data Broker Requests and Opt-Out Platform (DROP). The CPPA's Enforcement Division has already reached settlements with two data brokers for failing to comply with the registration and fee requirements set forth in Senate Bill 362. Additionally, the CPPA is facing a constitutional challenge from X Corp. regarding its law regulating AI-generated political content, which adds another layer of complexity to California's evolving privacy landscape.
