The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday warned consumers not to eat, sell or serve three lots of Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart, citing the risk of Cesium-137 contamination. The agency said the retailer has begun removing the products and is offering refunds. The alert follows a U.S. Customs and Border Protection notice that detected Cesium-137 in shipping containers at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah. FDA tests subsequently found the isotope in one sample of breaded shrimp from Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati at 68 Bq/kg—well below the federal action level of 1,200 Bq/kg—but the agency said repeated low-dose exposure could raise cancer risks over time. Affected items—lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1 with a best-by date of March 15 2027—were distributed to Walmart stores in 13 states, including Florida, Texas and Pennsylvania. PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati has been placed on an import alert that blocks its seafood from entering the United States until sanitary conditions are verified. The FDA’s investigation is continuing.
