Elon Musk said on 12 August that his artificial-intelligence venture xAI will file an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing the iPhone maker of skewing App Store rankings to favour OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Musk claimed Apple is “behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach No. 1,” calling the conduct an “unequivocal antitrust violation.” App-tracking data cited by Reuters show ChatGPT holding the top spot in the U.S. “Top Free Apps” chart, while xAI’s Grok chatbot is fifth and Google’s Gemini ranks 57th. Musk also criticised Apple for excluding both Grok and the X social-media app from the store’s editorial “Must Have” list despite their download figures. Apple began integrating ChatGPT across its devices last year under a partnership with OpenAI. Apple, xAI and OpenAI have not commented on the threatened suit. OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman responded on X, describing Musk’s allegation as “remarkable.” The dispute adds to mounting scrutiny of Apple’s App Store. In April a U.S. judge referred the company for a criminal contempt probe after finding it failed to comply with an Epic Games ruling, and the European Commission fined Apple €500 million the same month for limiting developers’ ability to direct users to cheaper purchase options.
