Tesla has reached a settlement with Raina Pierce, a Black former production worker at its Fremont, California plant, who alleged pervasive racial harassment and discrimination. Pierce claimed she was subjected to racist slurs, gender-based insults, and was disciplined for behavior for which non-Black coworkers were not penalized. She also reported that a manager sometimes greeted her with phrases such as 'welcome to the plantation' and 'welcome to the slave house.' The settlement, proposed by a mediator and filed in San Francisco federal court under case number 22-03177, finalizes an agreement between Pierce and Tesla. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Separately, a California appellate court has overturned a previous dismissal of a defamation lawsuit brought by former Tesla engineer Cristina Balan against Tesla and Elon Musk. The court ruled that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to confirm an arbitration award in favor of Tesla and Musk, reversing the arbitration decision and allowing Balan to pursue her defamation claim in a public trial. Balan, who was dismissed in 2014, alleges she was publicly accused by Tesla of embezzlement after raising concerns about a potential design flaw in Tesla's braking systems.
“Each time that we tried to fix something, we were threatened.” Tesla employees who raise safety concerns are threatened with retaliation, says @CristinaIBalan, a whistleblower who won the latest appeal in a legal battle with Tesla and wants to face “pure evil” Musk in court. https://t.co/axby6mD4VA
