UBS Group AG is poised to pay at least hundreds of millions of dollars to settle violations by Credit Suisse of an earlier agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding American clients who evaded taxes. The settlement, reported by the Wall Street Journal, could be finalized as soon as this week. This action stems from a 2014 plea deal where Credit Suisse was found to have continued helping ultra-wealthy Americans evade taxes, despite the agreement. UBS, having acquired Credit Suisse, is now responsible for addressing these violations. The U.S. Senate Finance Committee in 2023 highlighted that Credit Suisse concealed more than $700 million from the government, leading to the current settlement negotiations. UBS declined to comment on the matter, and the DOJ did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
