Julie Jaman, an 82-year-old resident of Port Townsend, Washington, has secured a $65,000 settlement in her civil-rights lawsuit against the City of Port Townsend and the Olympic Peninsula YMCA. The agreement ends a legal battle that began in 2022 after Jaman was permanently banned from the YMCA-operated Mountain View Pool for objecting to the presence of a transgender staff member in the women’s locker room. Represented by the nonprofit Center for American Liberty, Jaman argued that city officials and YMCA staff violated her constitutional rights by barring her from the facility and removing her from a public meeting when she attempted to voice safety and privacy concerns. The settlement covers damages and legal fees and requires the city to delete certain online references to the incident, although Jaman’s ban from all Olympic Peninsula YMCA facilities remains in place. In a statement, the Center for American Liberty called the resolution “a major victory for free speech and civil liberties.” City officials said the agreement avoids further litigation while affirming existing YMCA access policies. The YMCA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
