Thousands of Syrian refugees have begun returning from Lebanon to Syria under the first United Nations-backed plan offering financial incentives. The initiative, supported by the Lebanese government, aims to facilitate the voluntary return of between 200,000 and 400,000 refugees by the end of 2025. Refugees receive $100 each while still in Lebanon and an additional $400 per family upon arrival in Syria. Transportation is provided free of charge, and border fees are waived to ease the process. The plan marks a major policy shift following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, with Syrian authorities welcoming the returnees despite ongoing war damage and security concerns. Lebanese Social Affairs Minister Haneen Sayed emphasized the goal of ensuring a safe and sustainable return. The first convoys of refugees have already crossed into Syria through the Al-Jadidah Yabus border crossing, with approximately 11,000 registered for return during the first week of the program. Lebanese officials have denied any connection between the refugee returns and the release of detained Syrians in Lebanon.
