The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on 9 July urged all armed factions in and around Tripoli to halt a growing military buildup, warning that any renewed fighting could endanger civilians and derail fragile peace efforts. In a statement posted late Wednesday, the mission called on forces that have recently deployed in the capital to withdraw "without delay" and pressed political and security actors to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric or actions that might spark clashes. UNSMIL reminded all sides that attacks on civilians constitute violations of international law and said perpetrators would be held accountable. Tensions have risen since Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah ordered the dismantling of irregular armed groups in May, a move that preceded the heaviest fighting in Tripoli in years and left at least eight civilians dead. Libya remains divided between Dbeibah’s Tripoli-based Government of National Unity and an eastern administration backed by the House of Representatives, while a 2020 nationwide truce continues to hold in name only.
