The spiritual leadership of Syria’s Druze community said on 15 July it welcomes the deployment of Interior and Defence Ministry forces to the southern governorate of Sweida, where days of armed clashes have unsettled the province. In a statement, Druze leaders urged all local armed factions to cooperate with government troops, refrain from resistance and hand over their weapons. Sheikh Yusuf Jarboua told Al Arabiya the community “stands with the Syrian state,” opposes any outside interference and will surrender arms once full state authority is restored. A contrasting appeal circulated later from senior cleric Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, who accused government forces of shelling the city and called on residents to resist the advance, underscoring divisions within the Druze leadership as security convoys move toward Sweida.
