A large tree limb collapsed onto a group at the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area near Malibu on Wednesday afternoon, injuring five people, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The branch fell at around 3 p.m. in the 2600 block of Mulholland Drive on grounds used by Camp Wildcraft, a children’s summer program. Fire officials said one person was transported to a hospital in critical condition while two others suffered minor injuries. The remaining victims were treated at the scene. The Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station confirmed that at least two of the injured are minors. Authorities cordoned off the area while arborists and public-safety investigators examined the tree and surrounding terrain to determine what caused the limb to give way. No structural damage was reported at the site, and the campground was closed for the remainder of the day as officials assessed safety conditions.
