Laguna Beach police arrested a 13-year-old boy on 8 July after video footage allegedly showed him igniting a firework moments before a brush fire erupted near Morningside Drive and Rancho Laguna Road the previous afternoon. Dubbed the Rancho Fire, the blaze scorched about four to five acres of hillside vegetation on 7 July, forcing the evacuation of homes along La Mirada Street, Katella Street, Summit Drive and Baja Street. Firefighters, aided by helicopters and air-tankers, halted the fire’s forward progress within several hours and reported no injuries or structural damage. The juvenile was taken into custody on suspicion of felony reckless burning of forest land, processed at the police department and released to his parents after juvenile hall declined booking because no injuries occurred. Investigators from the Laguna Beach Fire Department and the Orange County Fire Authority are finalising the probe, and the case will be forwarded to the Orange County District Attorney for possible charges.
