El Salvador recalled its ambassador to Mexico after Mexican Security Minister Omar García Harfuch said a drug-running plane intercepted in Colima had departed from Salvadoran territory. President Nayib Bukele demanded a public correction, arguing the claim lacked evidence and calling for an immediate clarification from Mexico. Mexican forces seized the light aircraft on 3 July after it landed on a clandestine strip in Tecomán, Colima. Authorities detained three Mexican nationals and confiscated about 427 kg of cocaine. García Harfuch said the aircraft was first tracked roughly 200 kilometres south of San Salvador before entering Mexican airspace, prompting a multi-aircraft interception by the Mexican Air Force. Bukele countered that regional radar data, confirmed by the U.S.-led Joint Interagency Task Force South, showed the plane never entered Salvadoran airspace and instead skirted the Pacific coast after being flagged by Costa Rica. “El Salvador does not hide criminals or tolerate drug trafficking,” he said while insisting the crew and aircraft were not linked to his country. Late on 10 July, García Harfuch acknowledged the crew’s Mexican nationality and said the reference to the plane “proceeding from El Salvador” stemmed from its radar detection point, not a confirmed take-off location. President Claudia Sheinbaum declared the episode closed, stating there was no ill intent and urging that the matter not become a political dispute.
