Do Kwon, the founder of the collapsed cryptocurrency projects Luna and Terra, is scheduled to enter a guilty plea in a U.S. federal court hearing set for August 12, 2025, in the Southern District of New York. Kwon was extradited from Montenegro to the United States on December 31, 2024, and initially pleaded not guilty to nine felony charges, including securities fraud, market manipulation, money laundering, and wire fraud. The U.S. government has agreed to advocate for a 12-year prison sentence, reduced from the guideline 25 years, contingent on Kwon committing no further crimes, along with a fine of $19 million. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice has announced the extradition of 26 alleged cartel members from Mexico, including Servando Gómez Martínez, alias "La Tuta," former leader of Los Caballeros Templarios, and Abigael González Valencia, known as "El Cuini," a top figure in the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). These extraditions are described by the DEA as a key step in dismantling major drug cartels. Several defendants have appeared in federal courts in Washington, D.C., Brooklyn, and the Eastern District of New York, where they face charges related to narcotics trafficking, organized crime, and illegal firearms possession. Some defendants have contested the legality of their extraditions. Among those arraigned is Jesús Guzmán Castro, alias "El Chuy," a Sinaloa Cartel operator, who appeared before a federal magistrate in Brooklyn.
