Mexico’s Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero said the Fiscalía General de la República will appeal a judge’s decision that freed Israel Vallarta, who spent two decades in prison without sentence on kidnapping charges. Gertz argued that six victims remain entitled to protection and reparation, calling the appeal a “moral, ethical and legal obligation.” During the same briefing, Gertz announced the revival of criminal proceedings against steel magnate Alonso Ancira for failing to complete a reparations deal with Petróleos Mexicanos. Ancira was released in 2021 after agreeing to repay US$216 million, but has stopped payments with about US$112 million outstanding, the prosecutor said. The FGR will seek international legal assistance to pursue the case while Ancira resides in the United States. Gertz also confirmed that the FGR will challenge the release of migrant-rights advocate Luis Villagrán, stating that judges disregarded 75 pieces of evidence alleging people-smuggling and organised-crime links. A new investigative file will be opened as part of the appeal.
