The U.S. Department of Justice has indicted two Mexican businessmen residing in Texas, Ramón Alexandro Rovirosa and Mario Alberto Ávila, for allegedly bribing officials at Mexico's state-owned energy company Pemex and its subsidiary Pemex Exploración y Producción between 2019 and 2021. The charges include offering approximately $150,000 in cash and luxury items such as Louis Vuitton and Hublot products to at least three Pemex officials. These bribes reportedly enabled the businessmen to secure contracts worth around $2.5 million. One of the accused is reportedly a member of the National Action Party (PAN) and is currently a fugitive. Mexican authorities, including Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, have stated they will seek information from U.S. and Pemex officials to verify the existence of the contracts and investigate potential corruption. This case marks one of the first new foreign bribery charges since the U.S. Department of Justice under the Trump administration renewed enforcement of anti-corruption laws.
