Orlegi Sports, the Mexican investment firm led by Alejandro Irarragorri, has begun a formal process to sell Atlas Fútbol Club as it moves to comply with tighter domestic and FIFA rules restricting multi-club ownership. Atlas, based in Guadalajara, is one of two Liga MX teams controlled by Orlegi, which also owns Club Santos Laguna. People familiar with the plan said Orlegi hired investment bank Moelis & Co. and law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges to advise on the transaction. Financial terms have not been disclosed, and Orlegi declined to comment. The prospective sale comes amid a broader shake-up in Liga MX ownership. Earlier this week, Grupo Caliente sold Querétaro FC to a group led by Atlanta-based investor Marc Spiegel for more than US$120 million, the league’s first majority acquisition by a U.S. buyer. Additional club sales are expected in the next year as owners adjust to the new regulatory landscape. Orlegi bought Atlas in 2019 and oversaw a turnaround that produced back-to-back league championships in 2021 and 2022, the club’s first titles in seven decades. A change of control would mark one of the few instances of a Liga MX team coming to market, underscoring the mounting pressure on multi-team owners to streamline their portfolios.
