Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has denied having any information regarding alleged espionage by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) against DEA agents in the United States during the 2024 trial of Rubén Oseguera González, known as "El Menchito." Sheinbaum emphasized that organized crime exists in both Mexico and the U.S. and dismissed claims that her government was involved in spying activities, calling such accusations false and deliberate misinformation. She also rejected allegations of complicity or collusion with criminal groups, responding to controversial statements made by Jeffrey Lichtman, the defense attorney for Ovidio Guzmán, son of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, who recently pleaded guilty in a Chicago court. The Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR) condemned Lichtman's remarks as irresponsible, while the Presidential Legal Counsel, Ernestina Godoy, labeled them as deserving of national repudiation and reaffirmed Sheinbaum's high approval rating. Additionally, Sheinbaum addressed accusations related to former President Enrique Peña Nieto, who was alleged by an Israeli publication to have received $25 million from Israeli businessmen seeking contracts in Mexico connected to the Pegasus espionage system. Sheinbaum dismissed these claims, noting they originated from an Israeli trial mentioning an unnamed individual elected in 2012, and denied any impunity pact between Peña Nieto and former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She highlighted that a public consultation on prosecuting former presidents did not reach the required participation threshold. These statements were made amid ongoing investigations by the FGR into Peña Nieto, which Sheinbaum stated should be clarified by Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero.
