Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed strong opposition to several recent actions by the United States government affecting Mexico. She criticized the $170 billion budget proposed by former President Donald Trump aimed at increasing deportations and building detention centers like Alcatraz-Caimanes. Sheinbaum condemned the immigration raids conducted in southern California agricultural areas, highlighting that since January 20, 2025, 355 Mexicans have been detained during these operations. Following a recent raid in Camarillo, California, where 25 calls were received by Mexican consulates, she ordered an expansion of consular resources to support detained nationals. Sheinbaum also announced that Mexico is considering filing a legal complaint in the U.S. over the death of Jaime Alanís García, a Mexican migrant who died during a raid in Ventura County. Additionally, she urged the U.S. government to intensify border operations to curb the flow of illegal arms into Mexico, which she said fuels organized crime and violence. On trade matters, Sheinbaum rejected the U.S. Department of Commerce's decision to reinstate a 17.09% tariff on Mexican tomato exports, describing the measure as unjust and announcing plans to take action alongside Mexican producers. Despite the tariffs, she affirmed Mexico will continue exporting tomatoes to the U.S., citing a lack of viable substitutes in the American market. Sheinbaum also responded to comments by Donald Trump alleging Mexican authorities are "petrified" by drug cartels, stating that Trump is misinformed and calling for equal treatment in bilateral relations. She reaffirmed Mexico's commitment to sovereignty and the welfare of its people in ongoing negotiations with the U.S. Furthermore, Mexican authorities recently dismantled six drug laboratories in Sinaloa, seizing over four tons of methamphetamines. Throughout these developments, Sheinbaum emphasized the need for the U.S. to acknowledge its serious drug consumption problem to enable effective cooperation between the two countries.
