U.S. President Donald Trump agreed early Friday to postpone for 90 days the 30% tariff he had threatened to impose on all Mexican imports, following a phone call the previous morning with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The duties had been scheduled to take effect at one minute past midnight on 1 Aug., raising the prospect of new costs for the United States’ largest trading partner. The reprieve gives the two governments until late October to craft a longer-term accord. Existing tariffs on steel and aluminium remain in place, but most other Mexican exports will continue to enter the U.S. tariff-free under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Sheinbaum said the extension preserves the T-MEC framework and called the outcome "the best possible commercial agreement" under current circumstances. Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard added that roughly 84% of Mexico’s shipments to the United States remain protected by the pact. In a statement on his social-media platform, Trump said the additional time would be used to negotiate broader arrangements covering trade, border security and migration. Trade analysts welcomed the breathing room for supply chains but cautioned that the tariff threat could return if no agreement is reached within the three-month window.
