Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she is confident Mexico and the United States will reach an agreement before 1 August, the date when President Donald Trump has threatened to impose an additional 30 % tariff on Mexican exports. Sheinbaum told reporters that talks between officials from both countries are progressing and that she sees room to improve trade conditions without the surcharge taking effect. Sheinbaum spoke by telephone on 15 July with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose government received a similar letter from Trump warning of a 35 % tariff on Canadian goods. Both leaders agreed that the U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement must be upheld and pledged to coordinate negotiating strategies. The Mexican president added that Carney plans to visit Mexico, with the date to be set in the coming weeks. To reinforce Mexico’s position, Sheinbaum met with senior executives—including representatives of América Móvil, Bimbo and steelmakers—to accelerate investment commitments under the government’s Plan México and document their projects in the United States. Business leaders, she said, are also lobbying partners north of the border to highlight the mutual economic damage that the proposed tariffs could cause.
