Aaron Ramsey, the 34-year-old Welsh midfielder and former captain of the Wales national team, has officially signed a one-year contract with Liga MX club Pumas UNAM for the Apertura 2025 season. Ramsey, who previously played for prominent European clubs including Arsenal, Juventus, Cardiff City, Rangers, and Nice, arrived in Mexico City in late June 2025 to complete his transfer. The move marks his first professional experience outside Europe. Ramsey’s signing was publicly confirmed by the Mexican ambassador to the United Kingdom, Josefa González Blanco, and later officially presented by Pumas president Luis Raúl González. Ramsey expressed excitement about joining the historic club and acknowledged Efraín Juárez, Pumas’ head coach and former player, as a key influence in his decision to join the team. Juárez reportedly initiated contact with Ramsey while coaching in Colombia and emphasized that Ramsey’s motivation was not financial but a commitment to the club. Ramsey will wear the number 10 jersey at Pumas, previously held by Leo Suárez. Despite his recent limited playing time and a relegation with Cardiff City, Ramsey aims to revitalize his career in Mexico. Additionally, Pumas pursued a high-profile goalkeeper signing, Costa Rican Keylor Navas, a three-time UEFA Champions League winner, but negotiations with Newell's Old Boys stalled over transfer fees, and the deal was ultimately abandoned. Pumas instead signed Colombian left-back Álvaro Angulo, who also cited Efraín Juárez as instrumental in his arrival. Ramsey’s arrival is seen as a major coup for Pumas and the Liga MX, bringing international experience and media attention to the club ahead of the upcoming season.
